The Boise Idea Market

Matt Homann (www.realBIGthinking.com) will be coming to town on June 8th to speak to the Idaho State Bar Association. (more info here). While he's in town Steve Nipper and I have persuaded him to do an "Idea Market" That evening.

What is an Idea Market?ɬ¢?¢‚Ǩ?æ?Ǭ¢? Think brainstorming + collaboration + networking + happy hour. The brain child of innovation consultant, retreat facilitator and conference planner Matt Homann, an Idea Market is part think tank, part focus group and part social club. At the Idea Market, attendees bring their business challenges, questions and (of course) ideas, and share them with some of the most creative and generous people in the community as they participate in fun exercises designed to cram the most innovation into a two-hour collaborative experience.

Dyno-might

If you recently attended the Kickstart event, held at Boise State a few weeks ago, you had the opportunity to meet one of Idaho's most fascinating entrepreneurs / inventors / technologists / toymaker / mimes. Caleb Chung, inventor of the Furby, isn't a mime anymore (at least not professionally) but he is in the process of bringing to market one of the most fascinating products I think I've seen in a long time. Pleo is the flagship product of Caleb's new venture Ugobe. Pleo is a baby dinosaur "toy" that responds to touch, responds to sounds, takes a nap when its tired, and will even limp if played its played with in the wrong way. Those are just a few of things Pleo can do.

Science and Technology Licence Plates

In a show of solidarity, it would be awesome if all of the rest of you went out and got an Idaho Science and Technology License Plate. The Pronetos guys all have them (and I've never seen another in the wild . . . how come?). Makes for a good conversation piece (i.e., excuse to talk about your biz), and it supports the tech community in Idaho. Win-win. I ordered mine on-line, but it is equally easy to do at the Ada County Courthouse on Front Street.

If you are riding a horse and it dies, get off

Washington Irving said "There is a certain relief in change, even though it be from bad to worse; as I have found in traveling in a stage-coach, that it is often a comfort to shift one's position and be bruised in a new place." I love that statement and have come to view it as telling of the tech environment not only in Boise, but in Idaho and to my dismay just the other day, Oregon. Over the past several weeks, I have found myself shifting and getting new bruises. I have been involved in conversations, discussions and meetings that sent me into a time warp - back to 2004 when I was in the Office of Science and Technology. The fact that it is three years later and the same conversations are taking place is incredible to me (and not in a good way). The market doesn't stand still. Why should public policy?

Kickstand, May 10

Kickstand. You missed a good one.

The meeting's program centered on "pitch" presentations by several of the finalists from the "Speed Dating" competition at Kickstart. However, there were also some announcements, at least one of which I cannot share (but watch the print version of IBR).

Perhaps *THE* key to innovative companies?

We know a lot more than many realize about what it takes for an organization to be -and stay- innovative. This something I've consulted on for years and studied for even longer. The message hasn't changed in decades: The heart of the matter is learning to think entrepreneurially and keeping that mindset. It's not bureaucracy that kills innovation, it is bureaucratic thinking. We (organizations and communities) need to cultivate a cognitive (human) infrastructure that encourages innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. Stanford's Bob Sutton is "da man" in understanding how our businesses can be innovative. He will tell you there is nothing new; we have long known the keys to innovative activity, the keys for firms to stay entrepreneurial. We just can't seem to DO them. So, who blocks them? To find out, take this test before reading further... [note: rude word alert in link]

Blogroll up and running

I've finally added the blogroll. I have added the few Boise based tech company blogs that I could think of. If you are not listed and you are a Boise based tech company (or know of one I'm missing) please leave your URL in the comments.

Tech and Education

Saw this one through a Google Alert:

Microsoft tech guru emphasizes education
Business expert speaks to parents and students

I've had the opportunity listen to Bob Lokken speak a few different times and I have never heard him NOT talk about education. And ever since Microsoft's acquisition of Proclarity he's even more fired
up about it.

From the Idaho Mountain Express:

"Like water is to agriculture, education is to technology," Lokken said.

10 Questions with the Chief Geek at MetaGeek

Ryan Woodings has volunteered to be our first 10 Questions participant. Ryan is the self titled "Chief Geek" for MetaGeek. (I'm pretty sure that's CEO in entrepreneur tech speak.) Ryan left Cypress to start his company a few years ago and is doing incredibly well.

One of the things that strikes me about Ryan is that he is a perpetual student, he's always reading business and tech books and he's a great listener (not something I can say about every CEO).

PROFESSORS INVITED TO JOIN NEW WEB COMMUNITY

A new Web-based community for scholars has debuted at www.pronetos.com. Pronetos, the Professors?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢ Network, is the brainchild of Chris Blanchard, a graduate student in history. While working as an undergraduate student to publish a paper with social work professor Dan Huff in 2003, he became frustrated by the cumbersome process of peer review and publishing.

Fuelling the Micron Rumor Mill

I'm sure everyone's heard about the possibility of Micron getting purchased by Blackstone Equity Partners. If not you can check out the story here and here.

Of course it's hard to say if it would be a good thing or a bad thing. For every success story there's a not so successful story. Change is scary for some people (aka people with normal jobs).

ComputerWorld Story on Boise Tech Jobs

ComputerWorld just released a story on Boise, our growing tech community and our desperate need for IT jobs. There's Tech Treasures Tucked in and Around Boise, Idaho.

While the story does a great job of pointing out the great quality of life and did a much better job than MSNBC interviewing several of our smaller tech companies the story also highlighted our desperate need for more programmers.

Let's Talk Tech

There's been a lot of conversation here about the power of networking. Norris is setting up some after hours get meet ups next month and I wanted to propose a brown bag lunch next week. May 24th, I don't know where yet. In true entrepreneurial spirit we'll figure out a location later :) I want to get a rough head count so leave me a comment if you're interested.

The other issue that I wanted to address was Leo's burning question: What IS tech?

"Thirdspace"?Ǭù is not a Babylon 5 movie!

Think of the old "general store" - a "thirdspace" isn't home, it isn't work, but it IS a place for people to meet, whether intentionally or accidentally. A place where ideas tend to surface. Why do you think so many different kinds of people go to Dawson-Taylor? (or the Interlude before that?)

What makes thriving communities? Thriving communities... of people. Nurturing this is so important to all of us. We need places where we can meet intentionally, even work. (Google "co-working". An amazing model that could be implemented if only we had lots of excess office space downtown... LOL). But let's get started informally... What do we need? What's important?

TechConnect and Kickstand Sign Licensing Agreement

BOISE, ID ?É‚Äö?Ǭ??ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Ǩ?ì MAY 14, 2007 ?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Ǩ?ì Idaho TechConnect has signed a licensing agreement with Kickstand, a Boise-based entrepreneurial network, aimed at replicating the program throughout the state.

This is Your Platform

The Letters section of the site is intended to give everyone in the tech community a voice. Most of you may never leave a comment or write a letter for the site, and that?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢s ok. But for those of you with something to say, we wanted to make sure that we gave you an opportunity to do that.
This is not the place for shameless self promotion, or unintelligible ranting. This is the place where you may want to talk about what?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢s happening in the valley, or events that you attended or plan on attending.

10 Questions for Local Tech CEO's

One of the things I would like to do hear is interview all of the valley tech CEO's. Unfortunately I don't have enough time to personally meet with all of them. So let me ask you, dear reader, if you could ask any question to a local tech CEO, large or small, what would it be? And who would it be?

Here are some of the questions I've thought of so far (with the help of Krissa), feel free to add your own:
