Tom Loutzenheiser on gazelles

How many of you read the nice article that Tom Loutzenheiser wrote about gazelles for the Idaho Statesman? (Nov 16; linked at right in Bookmarks or?Ǭ† here). Nor have I seen any comments in the blogosphere. It scrolled off the front page immediately but I did comment on it. Not sure if anyone will see that either, LOL, so I'll essentially reprise my commentary here. Basics of Tom's article?

1) Gazelles (fast-growing firms) are essential.

2) Idaho could do a whole lot better.

VC conference in SLC

Feb 7 - and, ok, it's in Midway, not SLC -anyway, see the attached file (assuming I attach it properly...)

Brad Bertoch knows Boise. I met him only briefly, but the Wayne Brown Institute has a long track record. A long, GOOD track record. They and Zions Bank have started some interesting things that... I'll talk about later!

I'm listing it here, rather than a 'letter' or 'press release' is that I don't know how to upload a PDF to one of them, LOL.

Check it out!

Boise Bloggers

Steve Nipper and I did a blog dinner a little over a year ago and have been trying to do another one ever since. We've only managed the one so far, we're not doing so good.

Jason over at Philoking.com is trying to round up local bloggers and in the process has given Steve and I the motivation to get off our butts and do another Boise Blogger Dinner.

IEDA meeting (and IRP followup)

A quick followup re last Tuesday's IRP board meeting after a note from last Thursday's IEDA meeting...

IEDA is the state "trade association" for economic development & has some serious, committed, passionate talent working for our communities statewide [www.ieda.biz]. Entrepreneurial development is slowly getting on their radar screen. [Even nationally, economic development tends to focus on business attraction/recruitment, much less on business retention/expansion, and even less on business creation.] But the typical IEDA members ARE interested, so we need to keep cultivating friendships with Idaho's economic developers. (They would be ideal to carry the entrepreneurial "gospel" across the state... and it's fundable. More re $$ in future posts...)

The most interesting part of Thursday's IEDA meeting was a presentation by Ms. Brenda Deeley of Porter Novelli, a big-time "Madison Avenue" marketing/PR outfit, who BVEP engaged to get Idaho's name out there. They are doing this through sharing great Idaho stories. If you've noticed an upsurge in national stories that refer to Idaho or Idaho businesses, you'll know they've been busy. However, the biggest positive impact from PN's Brenda Deeley (and George Medici - who apparently loves Dawson-Taylor) may not be attracting firms. [I'll explain after the jump...]

Arid Women Make Donation to WaterCooler

WaterCoolers New ChairsWhen I walked into the WaterCooler a few weeks back to donate my time painting and eating pizza I was greeted by the site of Cheryl Larabee and Alicia Ritter sitting comfortably in two horridly pink circa 1950's.

Idaho Rural Partnership Digs Entrepreneurship!

Idaho Rural Partnership Board meeting on Tuesday focused heavily on encouraging entrepreneurship. (With Nancy Bergmann as chair, are you surprised?) They have a task force that's entrepreneur-driven (much like the emerging Idaho Innovation Alliance ["I2A"]). I found their desire to partner - with everyone - quite promising!

Entrepreneurs Brice Sloan [www.sloanfencing.com] and Ed Meyer were a big hit, even without any videos of Ed's devices that make, um, "organic fertilizer" [www.rodenator.com]. Their passion and insight went a long way to selling the attendees on what entrepreneurs believe is needed. #1 was mentoring. How do we connect people in distant areas with the right advice???

Idaho's National Allies, Part 2

Thanks for all the "cards and letters" re my prior post!

The Kauffman trip to KC was productive in many respects. Confirmed that there's serious money out there for entrepreneurial training initiatives, especially broad partnerships, especially for K-12 & community colleges - sustainable entrepreneurship too. Potentially money for Idaho... But there are steps Idaho will first need to take.

Micron gets Valleywagged

Some of you may be familiar with Silicon Valley tech gossip blog Valley Wag. Normally Valley Wag wouldn't have much interest to or in Treasure Valley residents, but taking a departure from their own valley they posted some commentary on Appleton's and his refusal of his yearly bonus.

Micron, a memory-chip manufacturer, had a bad year. The company lost millions of dollars and laid off over 1,000 employees. Because of this, CEO Steve Appleton turned down his yearly bonus.

being as smart as Ireland?

While in KC, I met one guy who's done rigorous work on the relative impact on job creation of business attraction, business expansion and business creation. the numbers may be jarring, but [wonk alert! wonk alert!] read on for the good news for Idaho!

The best evidence we have is that the economic multiplier for an entity that moves to or expand into a [new interstate] location is rarely more than 1, usually less than 1. [Less than 1 is bad.] The economic multiplier for existing businesses that expand averages ~2 (that is healthy). The economic multiplier for startups range from 2 to 4 (4 is very good). However....

Idaho: A VC's Perspective

This weeks Kickstand should be good:

Is Idaho REALLY Different???

VC's will discuss what they see that is different in Idaho when it comes to deals and financing of deals.

Nov. 8th 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

SPECIAL TREAT & SURPRISE for all Entrepreneurs

I'm not sure what the special treat is; if it's the event or if there's something else. Either way if you're a local entrepreneur who's even thinking about funding you'll want to be there.

Idaho's Allies... Nationally

I won't be at Kickstand tonight next week (bummer) but tonight (Nov 1) I am in KC as invited guest of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation (woohoo), the single largest funder of entrepreneurship research and single largest funder of entrepreneurship education and training. While this is a research-oriented conference, I will be hanging with the top aides to the head guy. These are people who already expressed interest in possibly funding cool initiatives in Idaho. (I will also be seeing other allies, both academic & federal - e.g., NSF is usually there.) Great chance to schmooze!
