Changes and Focus for the New Year

First off I would like to thank everyone who has made this an incredible year. I'm very excited about 2008 and what it will bring.

Over a year ago when I was debating how to launch this site I had a lot of questions. I knew that the only way to get those questions answered was to launch the site and see what worked and what didn't.

Based on all of my learnings there are going to be some changes happening over the coming year.

I hate politics

Maybe it's because I grew up the son of a lobbyist, but I really hate politics.

I haven't weighed in on the disbanding of the Governors council because I don't really know what to say. The Governor doesn't get tech, that's obvious. James Ellick doesn't seem to be doing anything. Personally I wash my hands at all of them.

Meet Pleo?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Dad

At CES last week, Pleo was quite a hit. It's easy to see why. The cute little dino is so realistic it's almost freaky.

The toy is a major success with kids and adults. Robotic geeks are so enamored with it that they've created a fan site where the skin the Pleo and take it apart. http://pleodreams.com/

Anyone who's heard Caleb speak knows that he's an incredibly creative person. If a person could just tap *some* of that and apply it to their work they would be doing well.

I just received an email that Caleb will be presenting at the next Boise State annual creativity workshop. You can read the full release after the jump -

Boise Blogger Meetup (Finally!) Scheduled

Idaho Business Expo

I get this question A LOT! So what exactly is Tech in Idaho?

The last time I went to the Idaho Business Expo I got a really good cross sectional view of what people consider tech in Idaho. If you can get a way for a few hours I'd recommend attending.

Local Business Leaders and Experts to Share Their Knowledge at the 17th Annual Idaho Business & Technology Expo.

January 14, 2008 - Boise, ID ---- The general public is invited to attend a wide variety of free seminars presented by local business leaders who are experts in their fields at the 17th Annual Idaho Business & Technology Expo. Examples of some of the 50 plus seminars scheduled are:

What Sun buying MySQL means to Boise

The Sun acquisition came as a total shock for local MySQL employees. MySQL has been talking about an IPO since the summer and the local office has been planning to expand. While the acquisition came as a surprise, local employees seem optimistic.

Rich Taylor, one of MySQL's Marketing Managers says that they expect MySQL to be left alone for now and to be rolled into Sun's Software Division.

Little is known what all of the implications for MySQL or their local office will be.

Blogs, Blogging and Bloggers

I have recently updated the blog roll.
Can Google Hear Me: Aaron Stanton stormed the gates of Google with an Idea and came back with a non disclosure agreement. I think we're getting close to finding out what's in the bag.

LGM llc: The LGM Boys as they're known around town, are the man power behind Pronetos and a few other web startups.

Appleton to step down?

Is this real? I think I need to pinch myself. Thanks to Russ over at matr.net for the heads up. The story he links to comes fromTech Confidential

Big changes are afoot at Micron Technology Inc., which has been struggling in the wake of a downturn in the hyper-cyclical dynamic random access memory chip market.

SuperValu expands it's data center in Boise

Eddie Kovsky over at the IBR is reporting that SuperValu will be expanding it's data center here in Boise. This is a good thing. How good, I don't know. I wonder how many jobs it will create.

One thing that has consistently impressed me about Albertons/SuperValu IT employees is
a)how many of them there were and
b) how fricking smart they are.

Every programmer I've met that works there or used to work there have increadible resumes and are usually almost too smart to talk to.
