April 2008

From the Web 04/26/2008

  • The last article from Eddie at the IBR. "A half a dozen of the state’s technology leaders met for breakfast last week to tackle the same problem that’s been plaguing Idaho’s technology sector for nearly a decade: What can the industry do to sustain its growth?"

TechBoise Meetup Tuesday 4/29/08

We are hosting our next TechBoise event on April 29th (next Tuesday) at 5:30 at The Fixx on the corner of 10th and Bannock.

How can tech entrepreneurs effect politics?

We actually have a program (by popular demand).

WaterCooler: almost full - almost open

It's nearing completion. Despite zoning battles, red tape galore and personal significant investment, Mark Rivers is almost ready to open the WaterCooler.

Mark let me wander through the building last week with my camera (sorry I'm no photographer). He also walked me down the row of nearly completed offices. All but two of them are spoken for.

Idaho Blog Directory

I have a small amount of blogs listed in the side bar here because I limit it to tech companies with blogs. But if you'd like a little shameless blog promotion that has nothing to do with the subject matter of your blog but rather the geographic region then go check out the American Bloggers Idaho Bloggers Directory. You can check out the entire blog directory by state here.

TSheets is using their blog to hire a copywriter

Are you a copywriter familiar with blogging and all things Web 2.0? If so, Matt Rissell, the CEO of the local Saas time sheet company is asking interested applicants to submit a blog post.

Events! Events! Events!

Twitter Lunch

If you're on Twitter and in Boise you probably already know this but George Seybold has instigated a Twiter Lunch today at Old Chicago downtown.  I don't think they have any idea we're coming so you'll want to get there a little early.

Happy Hour for Eddie Kovsky

via Krissa Wrigley:

The Dude abides…

At Tablerock, Wednesday 5:30 pm for a Happy Hour send-off for Eddie.  The party continues at the Downtown Edwards for the 7:45 pm showing of the Big Lebowski.  Spread the word.

Goodbye Ken Dey

If this were a few weeks ago I'd swear this was a horrible April Fools Day joke.  I'm in utter shock.

When I said that Eddie was one of the few local reporters that 'got it' I was really only referring to Ken Dey.  No one else covers as much local tech as they did.  There are some who come close but they don't seem to have the passion Eddie and Ken did.

And then I received this in my email:

TechLaunch 5.0: Who will be Idaho’s Entrepreneurial Idol?

Wow, I can't believe it's time for TechLaunch again.  This was by far one of the coolest events I went to last year.  I highly encourage you to check it out.

Goodbye Eddie Kovsky

I received an email this weekend that saddened me.

After nearly two years with the Idaho Business Review, I’ve decided to resign my position and move on to new challenges. There were a lot of factors that went into this decision; no single event has led up to this point.

I’ll still be with the IBR for two more weeks, and around Boise until the end of the month.

Tsheets Launches new service

I've been a slacker lately and I'm about a week late on this.

TSheets.com (www.tsheets.com) announced the launch of a new standard for web-based timekeeping called "Time Clock 2.0".  This standard was developed to create a benchmark for emulating the simple clock-in/out functionality of traditional time clocks, while still providing a web-based application.

Start-up Speed Dating is back!!

If you're a start-up I would highly recommend doing this.  Even if you're not looking for funding right now, this is the best environment to hone your pitch.  Because at some point you will be pitching someone; friends, the wife, investors, your first *paying* customer.

Have you ever done this before?  I'd love to hear your speed dating stories.  Have you pitched at a speed dating event?  Have you received at a speed dating event?

Do you have any tips for successful speed dating?
