Ben Quintana named BVEP's Poster Boy

A big congratulations to Ben Quintana for his new position with BVEP. An IBR Staffer wrote:

TechBoise Event Round up

The June 24 TechBoise Event was as Tac predicted, probably the best attended event we've ever scheduled. Thanks to all of you who attended! It was kind of like old friends week at the Water Cooler; you know what I mean if you were there.

So here's the basics if you missed it:

We had a panel presentation with Metageek CEO Ryan Woodings, Pronetos CEO Chris Blanchard, and fmr Statesman tech reporter Ken Dey. Tac provided moderation.

Geeks, Scholars and Journalists

I'm getting more and more excited about this Coming Tuesday's TechBoise event at the WaterCooler (14th and Idaho starting at 5:30). We have three presenters lined up to offset the networking and socializing (interspersed with spontaneous fuseball foosball matches).

A little better perspective

I appreciate Tac's nice welcome to TechBoise and I look forward to adding my thoughts on Boise's tech scene.

One thing I have to say, is that after a couple of months away from the newspaper business I have a more positive outlook about what's happening in Boise.

It's easy when you're in the thick of bad news to let it get to you and you end up focusing more on the negative issues than directing your efforts at what is positive.

It's hard not to get down a bit when there's a flood of bad news that has been ongoing for nearly a year.

TechBoise at the WaterCooler [June 24]

Mark River, Mayor Beiter @ WaterCooler
I'm not sure why people keep asking me to do these, I'm a horrible event planner. But I've been convinced that it's time to do another TechBoise event and this one will be at the WaterCooler.

Welcome Ken Dey

You can't keep a good man down. Two months ago when I posted about Ken Dey leaving the Statesman I was devastated for the local tech community. Who was going to cover what was going on in our tech business community?

Today I am proud to announce that Ken will be joining me in providing
ongoing commentary, opinions and the occasional useful item about our
local tech community. Since the first time I met Ken it was obvious to
me that he was passionate about technology here in the valley.

Tech vs Ag - Too Many Bridges Burned?

Technology and Agriculture have made interesting bedfellows in this state.  Many have argued that ag is the withering dinosaur and tech is the shining star of the future.  I myself have been caught up in this "bipartisanship".

Many have ranted and raged about the need for the state to do more to help tech succeed (once again I point the finger at myself).  We've yelled so loud that most people (especially those that serve in our legislature) have quit listening.

Our points are not unfounded.

TechLaunch 5.0 Winners

In case you missed it, or in case you were at IdaVation next door and therefore couldn't attend both (let's not do that again next year please), here's the official announcement of the winners.

Boise Companies Clean Up at TechLaunch 5.0

It's all about the quality of life

Ask any tech worker why they are here and not in Silicon Valley or Seattle and the answer is pretty consistent "Quality of Life!"

Julie Howard is doing an article on this subject and is looking for responces.

I’m looking for 2-3 tech workers who take advantage of, say, flyfishing or bicycling on their lunch hour and /or find the creative mix of Boise inspiring.

What is it about Boise that draws new tech workers?
