Throwing Serious Green at the Green Sector

At the Harvesting Clean Energy Conference last Monday in Billings, MT, attendees were all full up with the hope that Obama would come through with a stimulus package to solve our industry woes. In wind energy, we have long been challenged with the West's outdated transmission system and the absence of viable, cost-effective energy storage systems. Biomass and geothermal could use some federal loan guarantees along with some significant R&D dollars. Clean coal technology has all but disappeared from the energy radar.

It takes awhile to get through a 258 page stimulus bill, but it is well worth the effort for the policy analyst, or the concerned tax payer who wonders just what Congress and the President plan to do with our money. If education is your issue, this bill is good news.

Budget Cuts and Higher Education in the West

In a previous post I noted that were a state able to find a way to continue with infrastructure and education spending even amidst the downturn, that state would find itself in a great position once the economy gets on a better footing. Idaho Governor Butch Otter is betting a lot of political capital on continued infrastructure (road) spending and proposing tax and fee increases to pay the bill. But the situation for higher education doesn't look near as good.

For the past two years this site has really been a labor of love. I got some early help from some great people but as time went on and people's schedules got busier fewer and fewer people were helping out.  Ultimately I decided to scale back and run the site by myself. It was at that point I had to decide what would become of TechBoise. There were several points along the way I came really close to just pulling the plug on TechBoise, but I never could bring myself to do it.  I've always known that TechBoise could be much more than it is.
