Having the advantage of working with these guys I can tell you that there is a lot of misconceptions about VC's in this town and a lot of misconceptions about Highway 12 Ventures.

Moving On

This is one of the hardest choice I've ever had to make in my life.

If you haven't heard yet, I'm leaving HP and taking a job in Seattle.

I always knew that a time would come when I may have to make this choice but I never dwelt on it much. I chose instead to put my head down and work harder.

How Smart Are You About the Smart Grid?

I'll admit it: I'm an idiot about it. "Smart Grid" is one of those 2009 buzz phrases that's fun to say, but then when asked what it means, people tend to shift around and use other buzz phrases in an attempt at understanding. Idaho Environmental Forum aims to demystify with "Smart Grid: Is This the Silver Bullet?" at their May 5th Luncheon.

Lets start off, what’s your name, title and the name of your company?

Ryan Woodings, my title is Chief Geek at Metageek.

What does your company do?

Metageek makes and sells tools to troubleshoot wireless networks specifically Wi-Spy which is a spectrum analyzer. Traditional spectrum analyzers are about the size of a microwave. They are hard to use, way a ton, and they are really expensive. They cost anywhere from $6,000 to $50,000. They can get really expensive. I used one of those at my last job and they are a pain.

The position is full-time and is based in our main office in Meridian Idaho and will report directly to the CIO.

Responsible for

  • Continually improve the performance and scalability of the site
  • Configure servers and networks
  • Monitor site stability and performance
  • Troubleshoot issues with hardware, software, databases applications and network
Skills / Requirements: 
  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience with Linux
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, security, LAMP, HTTP, LDAP and MTAs
  • Scripting and programming skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in SQL and scripting languages (PHP, Perl)
