What is the local tech community missing? Idea Market Continued

Idea Market Question: "What is the local tech community missing?"

1. We need more entrepreneurial focus in area universities. BSU and others crank out computer science and engineering degrees without any classes on entrepreneurship.

2. Boise needs to find a tech identity. What are we good at? What expertise are we known for?

3. We need more entrepreneurial mentoring. Boulder, Colo., for example, holds a boot camp for tech start-ups -- three months of intensive training. Perhaps in Boise this could manifest in something like WaterCooler meets TechConnect meets angel investors.

Boise's Own Beer Summit - Today at 5pm Front Door

Ok, not really. Its just a regular Beer and Blog Meeting today - same bat time, same bat channel (5:00 - 6:30 pm at the Front Door).

If you are like TechBoise, you are seeing a lot of notices about ways to make millions from your blogs. TechBoise would like to take this issue up with the Boise Beer and Blog founder, @wyattwerner and learn how.

If you have any insight, please join us this afternoon at 5pm at the Front Door.

How can the city/county/state better promote science & technology?

Idea Market Question: How can the city/county/state better promote science & technology?

Resources: offer tax incentives for start-ups (less than 3 years old, producing products, have a minimum number of employees)

Education: offer/require more science & technology at all grade levels

Activities: hold science & tech fairs; promote industry

Support: offer more space for start-ups; have local businesses partner and offer support to start-ups

Entrepreneurial Class Outline - Idea Market

Idea Market Question: If you were to create a class on everything an entrepreneur needs to know, what topics would be on the course outline? For those topics who would you suggest be your (local) faculty?

TechBoise July Wrap-up

Thanks to everyone that attended TechBoise last night. We had a lot of 'new blood'. We love that! A big thanks to Wirestone for sponsoring too. A good time was had by all.

We had some great discussion during our Idea Market (and yes, those discussions will be appearing on the site shortly). We'll group them by topic and hope that the discussions will continue. We did receive a lot fo great ideas and input. TechBoise will start to tackle a few of them. If you are interested in helping with any of them, please let us know (krissa(at)krissawrigley.com).

Best/Worst Business Advice

Idea Market Question: What is the BEST/WORST business advice you were ever given?

BEST:

• Fail quickly (fail fast, fail cheap, learn a lot)
• No one ever got fired for recommending IBM
• If you are not unique, you’d better be cheap
• Believe in your people (set a high expectation)
• Start with VC in hand (lots of funding)
• Your customer is your paycheck (love your customers)
• Build measurement into every process (what is actionable?)
• If you’re not falling, you’re not trying (learn from errors)
• Stretch goals
• If you don’t make sales, nothing else matters

Where should tech in Boise (and Idaho) be in 5, 10 x years?

A big thanks to Carl for sending the group's responses to their questions. See what they had to say below and give us additional thoughts.

Idea Market Questions:

1. Where should tech (businesses, education, jobs, community, etc.) in Boise (and/or Idaho) be in 5, 10, x years?

2. What should we (as a tech community) be doing NOW to get there?

Bullet list of comments gathered:
• Micron and HP provided a key catalyst in the formation of the existing pool of skills and tech-community, but future growth in technology and innovation will come from other drivers

What happened to Boise's entrepreneurial spirit?

The Proactivist: San Diego
The Expander: Phoenix
The Globalizer: Chapel Hill, North Carolina
The Grower: Atlanta
The Diversifier: Madison, Wisconsin
The Dreamer: Youngstown, Ohio
