At least we’re not losing any jobs

Just in case you missed it here, here, here and here, Micron’s new joint venture will result in a new plant being built in Boise. That’s the good news. The bad news is that this isn’t expected to result in any new jobs, just not a loss of existing jobs.

The real interesting part of the story is in the comments of the Idaho Statesman. You’d think they had imported a bunch of people to comment from Digg. Micron is a very emotional issue in this town. I imagine that comes from it being the Valley’s largest employer with not even a close second that can pick up any slack during layoffs.

How are they counting “no new jobs”? No new jobs beyond their current level, or no new jobs beyond hiring back those whom they laid off? Any word on this?

It would have to be current level. I’m sure they would have made a big deal of hiring back any number of people.
