The Idaho Void in the Twitter Trend Map

Ok, all you tweeters in Boise and beyond - why are your tweets not showing up on the Trendsmap?

The map shows real time tweets (supposedly). While there is some interesting stuff that pops up (some people are already talking about Christmas), there is a huge void over Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas. What gives?

As if the Iowa/Idaho confusion wasn't enough, now this - people across the country can't see what's on Boiseans/Idahoans minds. Unacceptable!

Get to it and stake your claim on the map!

Legislature Considers Using Stimulus to Lower Tax Rate

Word has it that the Idaho legislature will consider using stimulus funds to lower corporate tax rates. Will "improving the business climate" by cutting corporate tax rates work to lure new companies to Idaho?

No.

Taxes, simply put, are a moral issue. Should we tax less? Maybe, but only because letting people keep more of their money is a good principle. Is it sensible to use one-time monies to permanently reduce tax rates? Again, no, that is the very essence of ill-advised public policy.

Stop looking for a job

It's my opinion that you would be better off if you spent as much energy creating a business plan as you spend updating your resume. You would have a better chance of creating a steady income stream if you met with people about your start-up idea than spent meeting people about finding a job.

I know entrepreneurialism is scary for many of you. It doesn't come natural to most of us. Not everyone sits around dreaming up business ideas (some of us can't stop). If you are currently looking for work consider your unemployment check as seed capital to your start-up.

First: read this post in it's entirety.
Second: write down 5 rough ideas in a notebook.
Third: Come to the next TechBoise event, next Wednesday the 25 at the WaterCooler. email me (tac@techboise.com) to let me know you're coming with a few ideas and I'll connect you with the right people.

I posted this 2 months ago but I think it bears re-posting in its entirety. It is even more true now than it was then.

Incubating 10, $1 Million Start-ups by 2010 - in Oregon.

Just when it's needed the most, the innovation community comes to the rescue with a plan to incubate 10, $1 million companies by 2010. Except it's not in Idaho: it's in Oregon.

CWI vs TVCC: Battle Royale?

The Idaho Statesman noted this week the possibility of Treasure Valley Community College co-locating at a new City Hall building in Caldwell:

Plans for new TVCC campus may merge with Caldwell city hall plans<

Plans for a new Treasure Valley Community College may be merged with the project for a new city hall complex downtown, Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas said Tuesday.

The Power of Community. Get Involved.

It was about a year ago that many of you talked me into holding the TechBoise events. I first resisted because I hate event planning (I'm just not that organized). When we first started holding them we did it every other month and there was no reason to when we would hold them. I usually just scheduled one about the time people started asking when the next one would be.  After a while, as the events started to grow it became apparent that we would need to move to a set monthly schedule.

Be a part of the solution

Idaho has reached a record number of unemployed. And it's only going to get worse. We need more jobs, now, and there is no immediate fix.

Every single day I have multiple people ask me if I know of any jobs. I hear about some here and there, but they're getting fewer and further between. And it's only going to get worse.

Let me ask you a  few questions to help you find a job.

What is the ideal kind of company you would like to work for?

Is local entrepreneurialism in a recession?

I have always (ok at least more recently) tried to stay positive on my posts here to TechBoise. I try to not talk about all the layoffs and bankruptcies. I even try (really hard) and avoid criticizing local politics.

For the love of (seed) money

When I talk to fellow Boiseans about what's needed to jump start our local tech ecosystem, we all agree that we have all the right pieces.

Boise has great entrepreneurs. We have great companies, ranging from the big guys down to the fresh start-up. We have good support organizations and service providers. We have talented people and are attracting new people with great experience from the more tech developed coastal areas. We even have readily accessible early stage funding.
