Stop looking for a job
It's my opinion that you would be better off if you spent as much energy creating a business plan as you spend updating your resume. You would have a better chance of creating a steady income stream if you met with people about your start-up idea than spent meeting people about finding a job.
I know entrepreneurialism is scary for many of you. It doesn't come natural to most of us. Not everyone sits around dreaming up business ideas (some of us can't stop). If you are currently looking for work consider your unemployment check as seed capital to your start-up.
First: read this post in it's entirety.
Second: write down 5 rough ideas in a notebook.
Third: Come to the next TechBoise event, next Wednesday the 25 at the WaterCooler. email me (tac@techboise.com) to let me know you're coming with a few ideas and I'll connect you with the right people.
I posted this 2 months ago but I think it bears re-posting in its entirety. It is even more true now than it was then.
Be a part of the solution
Idaho has reached a record number of unemployed. And it's only going to get worse. We need more jobs, now, and there is no immediate fix.
Every single day I have multiple people ask me if I know of any jobs. I hear about some here and there, but they're getting fewer and further between. And it's only going to get worse.
Let me ask you a few questions to help you find a job.
What is the ideal kind of company you would like to work for?
To all my "marketing consultant" friends: What is the ideal kind of company you'd like to market. What would they sell? Who would they sell to? What problems would they solve?
To the engineers: What kind of products does your dream company make? What would your customers think would be the coolest thing about it? How would you make it?
Do you have a picture of the ideal company? Good. Now go start it.
Go read, 6 reasons why this economy is great for startups. Then come to the Dec 17th TechBoise Holiday event and mingle with other people looking to be a part of the solution.
Be the solution. Don't wait for someone else to come and solve your problems, because they're not coming. They have their own problems.

Think Recalibration, not Recession - we're "hiring"
Many of us don't think this is a normal recession where there's a dip and things basically return to normal. For example, I have a startup in the local media/marketing arena. Many of the newspaper companies are thinking this "dip" will be like others. I couldn't disagree more. We're already seeing many shutting down or scaling back dramatically. I think this is true for other sectors as well.
I'm convinced that the way local marketing and advertising is done is fundamentally changing. Take Search/Google for example. There's now more local business lookups done via the search engines than in print yellow pages yet a typical small business owner is doing what they've done for decades. The "good news" about the recession is that many are actually recalibrating and asking themselves what they should be doing differently. This spells a huge opportunity for the organization that figures out how to address that gap yet to bridged. Gratuitous plug ahead :) Our plan is to build what I think of as a virtual digital marketing agency made up of local independent marketing consultants. Our value prop to consultants will be somewhat akin to a franchise business without the major capital outlay. That is, we'll develop the product and "operations manual" that they can run with and split the spoils. We'll start with Search since it's the best foot in the door and even in this economy continues to grow 20% per quarter.
We'll be in town March 3-5 and hope to connect with as many folks as we can. If one has an interest in this arena, we hope to visit with you. I hope to work with Tac to help us reach the TechBoise community as he's done a great job of building this community which would be a natural fit.
Now is the time to be proactive...
I’m consistently amazed at the diversity of talent we have in the Treasure Valley. Unfortunately, it seems we often don’t maximize these resources to create worthwhile business ventures.
I, for one, am interested in being a part of the solution. Thus, I’m always looking for opportunities to apply what I know to new and interesting ventures.
As always, I look forward to meeting new individuals (and seeing old friends) at the monthly meeting. Take a look at my company’s profile (Benchmark Research & Safety, Inc.), see if the services we provide might fulfill a current or future need, and track me down Wednesday to discuss your ideas. I'm pretty easy to spot – I’m usually the tallest guy in the room.
At the very least, introduce yourself and ask me about the world of human factors and ergonomics and how it might be applicable to your world. If you can’t wait until Wednesday, then visit my blog. Also, please feel free to email me beforehand so we can get the conversation started.
On a similar note, I would encourage the TechBoise audience to read Tom Friedman’s most recent article, Start Up the Risk-Takers.
Good advice, Tac in a scary economy
Moreover, it's an economy [especially in Idaho] reminiscent of the beginning of the fire scene in Disney's 'Bambi'. The animals in the forest are staring to act all cagey, and then that first whiff of smoke....
Right now the good old boys in state govt are about to divvy up the federal spoils...and let's face reality, even though technology is the #1 segment of Idaho's economy....tech people do not have a seat at that table. Brian Whitlock is a 'tech person', representing INL? Jeez, gimme a break.
What does this tell you? 1st: they don't have clue how to seriously spend that money so it really does some good in 2-5 years. 2nd: for all you techies, in the immortal words of Gordon Geecko, "if you're not on the inside, you're on the outside."
How To Setup Your Own Software Development Company
Matt Raible has a good set of posts on how to setup your own software development company, although I would check with an accountant before following some of his tax advise,
